Want to stop forced circumcision of infants and children? Here's how.
- Come out publicly with your position. Every successful social movement has relied on individuals to come out publicly with their position. If you hesitate to take a stand except from a position of anonymity, you should count on being ineffective. Anonymous positions are easily dismissed as lacking conviction. Anonymous individuals are easily dismissed, period. Abolition, women's suffrage, and gay rights were won or are being won by real people with real names who were willing to put said names on the line. Only cowards push for change that they can't later be held responsible or be given credit for.
- Give money to the organizations or individuals who have given their name, time and their own money to the cause. We can't all speak out all the time or reach all the people we need to reach. So, support those who are working in areas you can't or prefer not to. Money drives activism not because any of us are in it for the money, but because we live in a country and a society that has monetized our every move. For better or worse, we have to pay to get our message out. This website costs at a minimum $15 per month and has cost as much as $300 some months. Yes, I want your contribution. No, this site isn't going away without it.
- Join the organizations doing the work. There are many membership organizations out there. Add your name to the roster and plug your association. Transparency and the strength of our argument that individuals, when they are capable of giving consent, must make the circumcision decision for themselves is an unassailable argument. It must be made openly, repeatedly, and amplified through solidarity with others who believe the same thing through organizations that harness the power of numbers.
Clearly, all three steps are interrelated. Will you step forward and end forced circumcision of neonates? Will you work towards shifting the circumcision decision back to the individual and away from doctors and parents? Join those who have.
