The US election may seem outside the concern of this blog. However, PEPFAR and US public health policy are very likely to go in different directions, depending on who wins this election for the presidency, not to mention who takes control of Congress, i.e. Demos versus the Repubs.
Of particular note is reform of the health care system to create something like universal health care in the US, which is the first step towards an eventual single payer plan. In countries where a single payer plan is in place, neonatal circumcision is very uncommon.
I'm not saying that an Obama** win would result in a change in PEPFAR funding for circumcision in Africa. But I think US policy regarding neonatal circumcision would be impacted. Time will tell.
** Curiously, Obama's African roots are in the Kenyan Luo community, where circumcision is anathema and the drive to promote circumcision has found the most resistence.
